Spotify- History of Songs UX/UI

‚I love to discover new music and I am always in the hunt for a new catchy song’ that’s why I choose Spotify as my source of music on the daily basis. I really like the way how the application works and how new modern algorithm helps you to discover music that’s you know and you love. Most of my days I stick to my favorite playlists and radios, another day I try to find something new fresh that fits me to my mood, this is the moment to switch to new radio playlist with different Genres & Mods. I would like to present my proposition for an additional function inside a mobile application that helps to have a track of your favorite songs that’s you didn’t save on time or you miss it during a busy day.

Maybe we start what is Spotify by definition of technopedia.

Spotify is a new digital music service that enables users to remotely source millions of different songs on various record labels from a laptop, smartphone or other devices. This subscription-based service has been available in some countries since 2008. It can run on a Windows, Macintosh or Linux operating system, and is supported by iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices.

One of the main features of Spotify is the ability to share music with others. Spotify users can send music via social media platforms or through email, although some types of music sharing require the recipient to be a Spotify member.

Spotify also addresses the limitations of lack of access to Wi-Fi services through its offline mode provision. Depending on the user’s account type and other factors, Spotify can sync certain amounts of music, in playlists, to a device so that even when the user is disconnected or offline, he or she will be able to hear those selected songs. This and other exclusive features make Spotify a unique service in the very new field of subscription-based digital music hosting.

Problem Statement

Spotify Application is designed to:

Provide

  • Music – There are millions of songs on Spotify. Play your favorites, discover new tracks, and build the perfect collection.
  • Playlists – You’ll find ready-made playlists to match your mood, put together by music fans and experts.
  • New Releases – hear this week’s latest singles and albums, and check out what’s hot in the Top 50.
  • Search – Know what you want to listen to? Just Search and hit play.
  • Browse – Check out the latest charts, brand new releases and great playlists for right now.
  • Discover – Enjoy new music every Monday with your own personal playlist. Or sit back and enjoy Radio.

We have observed that service isn’t providing:

  • History of recently played songs on mobile version of application
  • Only 50 positions without clear indication of time when song was recently played

which is causing:

  • Lack of easy and fast access to recently played songs
  • Frustration, when we want to find a song, played some time ago and we must go thru hundreds of songs to find our favorite one.

We could enhance the user experience by creating a separate window with a history of recently played songs filtered by the time when they were played. This simple enchantment can simplify the way to navigate to the previously played song in shuffle mode or easy comeback to songs that we really like during the day.

We believe that creating this alternative option could lead to increased user satisfaction while using Spotify and solve problems that currently must be solved by outside application integrated to Spotify.

Untitled-1Artboard 1

Name: Veronica

Age: 25 years old

Behaviour

  • Like to listen to music, in home on laptop, and on smartphone during the day
  • Like to discover new music and share it with friends
  • All music buy online and use paid music platform to listen to offline her favorite music

Need and Goals

  • Easy access to favorite music all the time
  • Track of daily listen to music during song exploration from radio stations
  • Offline exploration possibilities

Potential solutions:

  • Creation of history fold with all played tracks for las week
  • Cross platform accessibilities for history and offline content

First case scenario – User couldn’t use the device while working, cycling or running and finding a song in hundreds on the could be tricky and even difficult because we don’t know the name of it and we don’t really know where on the list this song was localized or simply we don’t remember it well .

To solve this problem while the application is still running and you still have the same playlist, you can open currently played a song and start going backward to the desired song. It can take a few minutes sometimes because you have to start listening for few second if this is the one.

To solve this problem we have to: find radio that we played this song and start to research it if we are lucky we can scroll backward for few minutes to find this one

Second case scenario – User close application and have no possibility to reverse order of played songs so he is forced to manually search sometimes hundreds of songs to find this one he really liked.

This scenario is almost impossible so we most likely lost this song ( and I don’t want to remain this feeling in every person life when you can’t remind yourself this Greate song that’s sound like ” la lalal lalalala la la „).

Outcomes

  • Increase user satisfaction
  • Creating alternative way to navigate to previously played songs

Increase user satisfaction

Creating a functional and interactive history of previously played songs we can create an alternative way to research previously played songs, provide fast access to your list of songs played during the day or even a week.

Creating alternative way to navigate to previously played songs

By creating a history of songs tab with list of songs that was played we can create alternative and efficient way to navigate to previous played songs between multiple radios and predefined playlist, helping user not only come back to previously played songs but to come back to previous radios and playlists.

Testing assumption

We believe that creating this alternative option could lead to increased user satisfaction while using Spotify and solve problems that currently must be solved by outside application integrated to Spotify.

Features

We can create alternative way to collect data in song history panel by adding count of played song instead listed it as new position which not only decrease length of history list but also give us access to another option such as statistics or another way to filter through list ( most played, most played in las week etc. )

Mockups

My proposition for implementation this option inside application and my user interface proposition.
